Students come to the room to the sound of symphonic melodies and sounds of the ocean to to learn about the Age of Discovery, how the 21 countries that have Spanish as their national language developed. Through the use of sensorial materials the teacher told the story of how this time in history started, the history of the compass, the various navigational winds such as the ponente and the sirocco, the mythical beliefs of the time, other difficulties in the journey of the spice trail, the diet of the European population before the "1492 Columbian Exchange" and finally the purpose that sparked this historical event. Students answered the question: How did the peppercorn lead us to the "Age of Discovery"? Students placed glass pebbles on the map to indicate the journey. At the end each student picked up an object and told a segment of the "story". Students recorded their discoveries such as the main explorers that contributed to discovery of the Americas in a pictorial Learning log. The next day the teacher made a general introduction of the the continent of Europe featuring, Spain and exposed the students of fun facts and what things come from Spain for the 2nd grade and for the 3rd grade fun facts of Mexico and what things come from Mexico. For the language component we are using colors to describe clothing, practicing several conversation questions and various greetings. In the 2nd grade we will learn about the most famous poem dedicated to the color green. The name is "romances sonambulos" by Garcia Lorca. The 3rd grade will learn the song "De colores". I am having fun looking at my students moments of "aha". I love the opportunity to be able to plant the seed of life long learners and open the doors of curiosity of other cultures.
